Loving My Neighbor

Read Patrick’s reflection

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE — Psalm 34:18 (KJV) “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

PORCH REFLECTION — Loving My Neighbor A broken heart is not proof that God left. Psalm 34:18 reminds me of His nearness to those who are hurting. Luke 10:25–37 reminds me to notice somebody else’s need and show mercy through what I do.

The other day, at the doctor’s office, I saw an older woman struggling to get out of her car. I felt a strong urge to help, so I got out of our car and helped her. Looking back, I’m grateful I noticed her and stopped. I see that moment as a reminder to live my faith in a simple, practical way.

I don’t know everything about her story. I didn’t have to. Somebody right in front of me needed a hand. That’s what the Good Samaritan story brings home to me: love becomes something we do.

God sees farther down the road than we do. My part is to pay attention to the person in front of me and ask, “What would kindness look like right now?”

TODAY’S STEP Be gentle with yourself and one other hurting person today. Notice who is in front of you, and offer practical help when you can.

SHORT PRAYER Father, thank You for Your nearness when we are hurting. Help me notice my neighbor and show mercy in what I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Awareness / Self-Interrupt

Pause. Become aware. Observe without reacting. Return.

Stay Out of Imagination

Notice a thought without automatically believing it or following it. Be still, return to the present, and let truth—not imagination—lead.

Who Are You?

You are not every thought, emotion, label, hurt, or burst of ego. Observe what rises without letting it define the person God made.

Laws vs. Words

Words can point toward truth. The deeper test is whether patience, honesty, mercy, and responsibility are being lived.

Forgiveness / Dropping Anger

Forgive parents and others, release resentment, and take responsibility for your own response. Forgiveness frees you from carrying the injury forward.

Quiet Time

Sit quietly. Observe thoughts without chasing them. Ask God to let you see clearly, and remain still without forcing an answer.
