This week’s uplifting story

Twelve Years of Knocking on Doors

What happened

Mary Ann and Steve Stackable, high-school sweethearts married for 54 years, began delivering Meals on Wheels in Midland County, Michigan, in 2014. Twelve years later, they are still showing up.

Their route became more than a food delivery. They bring conversation, humor, and a dependable human connection to older adults, and they also serve through a mobile food pantry. Senior Services of Midland County named them its October 2026 Volunteers of the Month.

Why it matters

Some kindness arrives in one unforgettable moment. The Stackables’ kind arrives on schedule, week after week and year after year.

Their story shows that a meaningful life can be built by faithfully showing up, learning somebody’s name, and letting that person know they have not been forgotten.

Morning in the Holler angle

“Folks, Mary Ann and Steve have been married 54 years, and for the past 12 of those years they’ve been carrying meals to older neighbors. Somewhere along the route, it stopped being only about the food. They learned names, shared laughter, and became familiar faces people could count on. Maybe the meaningful thing we are called to do is smaller and steadier than we imagined: find somebody who needs us, knock on the door, and keep showing up. I’m just asking questions. That’s all.”
