This week’s uplifting story
The Smallest Cargo on America’s Darkest Day
What happened
On September 11, 2001, six-month-old Kareena was in a Houston hospital waiting for an urgently needed liver transplant. A compatible liver became available in Nashville, but ordinary flights were grounded after the attacks.
Jill Grandas and a network of hospital workers, aviation officials, National Guard members, and transplant teams kept making calls until a military C-130 was cleared to carry the donated organ to Houston. The transplant succeeded. Twenty-five years later, Kareena and Jill finally met.
Why it matters
No one person could solve the entire problem. Each person simply refused to be the one who stopped trying.
The story also honors the donor family, whose generosity during grief made Kareena’s future possible.
Morning in the Holler angle
“Folks, that military airplane could carry enormous equipment, but on one of America’s darkest days it carried a tiny package of hope. A donor family, medical workers, airmen, and strangers decided one little girl’s life was worth the trouble. Sometimes kindness is making one more call. I’m just asking questions. That’s all.”
